Sage Wheat Bread

"A very nice whole wheat bread with the taste of honey and sage. Great right out of the oven."

INGREDIENTS:

 

1 1/2 cps water milk 1
1 tbs applesauce shorting 1 1/2t
2 cp whole wheat flour 1 1/2
1 cp bread flour 2/3
1/3 cp cornmeal 1/4
1 tbs brown sugar

3 tbs honey
2 tbs fresh sage 1 1/2 or
1/2 tbs crushed dried sage 1/2
3/4 tbs salt 1/2
1 pk active dry yeast

  • DIRECTIONS:

    In large bowl, combine 2 cps whole wheat flour, undissolved yeast, and salt. Heat water, milk, honey, and butter until very warm (120o to 130oF).
     
    Add to flour, brown sugar and sage mixture. Beat 2 minutes at medium speed of electric mixer, scraping bowl occasionally.
     
    Add 1/2 cp flour; beat 2 minutes at high speed.
     
    Stir in remaining flour to make stiff batter.
     
    Place in greased 9 x 5-inch loaf pan.
     
    Cover; let rise in warm, draft-free place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

    Bake at 375oF for 45 minutes or until done. Remove from pan; cool on wire rack.
